Now is the Perfect Time for “Fall Cleaning”

As we say goodbye to summer, it's time to welcome the beautiful season of fall to Toronto. The leaves will start changing colour to deep gold and fiery red, and families will go apple picking and drink hot cider together. Fall is also the perfect time to do one more big cleanup around your home before the end of the year. Here are three simple 'fall cleaning' steps to get you started.

Put away summer tools and toys

When fall rolls around, it's time to put away summer toys like pool inflatables, water guns, and oversized outdoor games. The same goes for gardening supplies, lawn equipment, and other seasonal tools. Make sure these items are completely dry and dirt-free before you store them to prevent mildew and rust. Whether you store these items in a shed, a garage or a storage unit, check for adequate ventilation and climate control so everything will stay in good shape for next year.

Do a deep cleaning

Use this time of year to clean those areas you usually forget: vacuum the refrigerator coils, clean off the ceiling fan blades, wash exterior windows, and dust or vacuum all window treatments. You can also replace the batteries in all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and replace your furnace filters. Your house will feel as clean as new when you're done.

Don't store until next year what you could be purging today

It can be tempting to throw everything into a closet or attic and worry about it next year. But you'll feel so much better – and make better use of your storage space – if you sort and purge now. Have your kids outgrown their bikes? Has your old air mattress finally bit the dust? If you find items that are broken, outdated or outgrown, either throw them away, or donate anything that's still in good shape. You'll free up more space around your house or storage unit, and you'll have less clutter to deal with next year.

While you make time for fun activities this fall, make sure you can enjoy the season at home, too. Contact us to learn more about storage unit options that may be right for you.
