Three Things to Do Before Summer Guests Start Pouring In
Do you feel like a deer in headlights at the thought of your kids' upcoming sleepover, or your friends or in-laws coming to visit? The idea of extra people and luggage crammed into your home can be overwhelming. But luckily, we have some tips that will make these visits as painless as possible.
Put away valuables and personal items
A lot of the stress you feel when kids or relatives are visiting comes from the constant worry that someone will accidentally break something. Your favorite collection of glass figurines, the hand-painted ornament you brought back from Paris, or the coffee mug your kids made for you... these are all irreplaceable if someone knocks them over and breaks them. Save yourself from this anxiety by carefully boxing and putting away valuables and mementos.
Childproof your home
If children will be visiting, it's important to make sure your home is safe for everyone. For smaller children, put away sharp objects or anything breakable that they can reach. But don't stop there: look at every item in your home and ask yourself if it could be dangerous in the hands of a child or young teen. For example, prescription drugs and alcohol should be stored away or kept under lock and key. Just imagine if your own child was visiting someone else's home. You wouldn't want them finding anything that could harm them.
Make a little extra space
If you're like most people who live in the Greater Toronto Area, you know that space is at a premium. So how can you comfortably fit extra kids or relatives into your home? The quickest and easiest solution is to put extra items into storage. The added space will make you and your guests feel more comfortable. Anything large that you won't need for the next few weeks is a good candidate for storage: suitcases, bulky sports equipment, and even extra furniture can all be kept in storage. And when everyone goes home, you can always get everything back out of storage again.
Having guests doesn't have to be stressful. Just make sure to prep your home and have a convenient storage solution ready.
