5 Steps to Get Your Home Ready for Holiday Guests

5 Steps to Get Your Home Ready for Holiday Guests

Toronto is buzzing with energy this holiday season, from the spectacular Christmas tree in Nathan Phillips Square to the cobblestone-lined streets of the Christmas Market. It's also the perfect time of year to get your house organized and ready for family visits with these five easy tips.

Get rid of unneeded items

You can instantly make space at home by selling or donating items you don't need. Use Craigslist or NextDoor to sell items online, or head to your local Goodwill to donate extra items. You can even save time by just boxing these items and placing them in storage until you're ready to look at them after the holidays.

Clear the kitchen

Make a pass through your kitchen to organize your cabinets, throw away stale or expired food, and put unused appliances into storage. Keep your shopping list handy to jot down essential ingredients that you need to restock as you go. Finally, check your appliances before the big cooking day arrives to make sure you have all the necessary attachments and everything is in working order.

Put away prized possessions

Before the house starts to fill with guests, you should remove delicate or special items and put them into storage temporarily. Just one clumsy guest or running child can send an expensive vase or favourite figurine crashing to the floor. By storing these out of sight, you can relax and enjoy yourself.

Check your holiday decorations

As you pull decorations out of storage, make sure to check for frayed electrical cords on lights and displays, and watch for broken ornaments or decorations. By doing this check early, you'll still have time to replace any damaged items.

Do a home safety check

Take a moment to do a thorough home safety check before guests arrive. Make sure all smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors have fresh batteries; keep at least one fire extinguisher on hand (typically in the kitchen); and be sure to have a well-stocked first aid kit. Have your fireplace checked and cleaned, and clean out lint from your dryer vent to prevent a dryer fire. Finally, keep potentially poisonous cleaning supplies well out of children's reach, and keep any guns in a locked safe or remove them from your home completely before children arrive.
